An ode to tea

Let's put aside the winter blahs for a second, shall we, and talk about tea. Tea is marvelous. This time of year, tea becomes my default activity, the ritual I create for myself in the midst of winter's quiet emptiness.

There's the post-shower, pre-commute cup. The just-arrived-at-work-and-getting-ready-to-blog cup. The pre-dinner, dinner, and post-dinner cups. This is what it takes to get through winter, for me. Faced with the constant, never-ending question of "What do I do now?", in winter, the answer can always be tea.

Eventually, the quiet emptiness will get tiresome, and my chronically underwhelmed mind will begin to clamor for springtime. I haven't reached that point yet this winter. Right now, I'm all about the easy simplicity of herbs soaked in hot water.

(That's all it is, really. Amazing. Maybe there's a drizzle of honey or a little milk mixed in, but really, this life blood of chilly weather, this elixir of winter survival, is really just wet dead plants in a cup.)

To this end, because I have a feeling others may also be slightly enamored of tea, I'm proposing a tea celebration. An homage. Everyone, chime in and list your favorite flavors, for the furtherment of tea-drinking, the betterment of humankind, and the easing of chilly bones everywhere.

My favorite five:

Good Earth Green tea with lemongrass
Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice
Twinings Earl Grey
Celestial Seasonings Peppermint
Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime

What are yours?

Constan Comment!!!!! Oh,how I love a cup first thing in the morning. My 16 year old daughter can't get through a day without at least 4 or 5 cups of tea. One of the great advantages to being homeschooled.

Hi. I'm having Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice steeped in a mug of hot, organic, unfiltered apple juice. Instant spiced cider. I enjoy lots and lots of teas; peppermint- green iced tea, Sleepytime Extra, Tension Tamer to name a few. My favorite morning wet plant matter in a cup would have to be coffee though! ;) Peace, Stephanie

I blogged about this very thing in November! http://hilariemae.blogspot.com/2009/11/tea-fanatic.html

And my all time favorite is Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger. I could drink nothing else for the rest of my life and be perfectly satisfied.

Whoa gals! I hadn't checked this space since Friday (I like to take weekends off)... who knew tea would spawn such a happy dialogue?! Suffice to say, I've got some new ones to add to my list. Constant comment is probably my sixth fave. Oh, and all you earl grey lovers out there... do yourself a favor and try it sometime with a shot of vanilla syrup at your local cafe. It's da bomb.

My most favorite tea is Aveda's Comforting tea. It's weird to get tea from a hair salon but it is fantastic. Lo, it is also fantastically expensive. But worth it in my book.

Other favorite is Tazo Zen. It's such a good classic green.

I would like to second the Twinings Early Grey and Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime. I'm also a big fan of Yogi Tea Detox (the berry/fennel seed one) and a good cup of Mate.
