You've Come a Long Way, Baby: Great Room

A view of our new house, past and present. A reminder of how far we've come, and a morale-booster for the upcoming weekend of work.

If there was ever any question as to the age of the former inhabitants of our downstairs, this should clue you in. It was a little old lady. She liked seafoam green, and berry pink, and air fresheners, and she left her mark. For the past three months, we've been de-geriatrifying the house, removing bathroom grab-bars and air fresheners, and tearing up seafoam green and berry pink carpeting. The wallpaper came out of this room fairly easily (read the story here), which was a blessing.

And now the room looks like this.

The color is Behr Castle Stone, and I love it lots.

I love the floors more, though.

We're not sure if they're maple or chestnut. Leave that one to my dad, the cabinet maker, to figure out. They sure shine up real nice.

Ahead for this room: my ambitious hand-painted wall project, a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling, and re-finished floors. The room is our biggest-- 12 x 17 1/2 feet-- so we'll likely be doing lots of hanging out in here. A big gray couch (maybe even a sectional?) and a salvaged mantelpiece would look terrific in here. Just sayin', you know, in case the fates are listening...

OMGosh!! What did you put on the floor to make it shine like that? They're gonna look amazing!

Uh, just water! Once it dries, of course, the shine dulls out. When we re-finish the floors, though, they'll be good 'n shiny all the time.

I love those hardwood floors! Why oh why do people who have them cover them up with carpet? Keep up the good (though hard) work!

I *know*! Carpets have their place, but it emphatically isn't over gorgeous old hardwood floors. Thanks for your encouragement!

ditto on the carpet issue. Still mad at my Mother for putting in wall to wall way back in 1972! ugh. And some of that was SHAG!!!!

Your new home is amazing! So happy for you two.

Your new home looks great. I can't wait to see it with your stuff in it. Moving advice? Allow for flexibility - however much you plan, some things are never as they seem! Good luck!
