The perfect alibi

My attempt to hop back on the blogging bandwagon last week was stymied by the whirlwind arrival of a late-summer cold. And, as much as colds are icky and annoying, isn't there also something sort of nice about having an excuse to indulge yourself? Anything you'd normally push yourself to do becomes something you can rationalize out of, because the universe has blessed you with a cold, the perfect all-encompassing no-questions-asked alibi.

Sure I can wear this ratty t-shirt to the grocery store, because I'm sick and who cares? Macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes for dinner? I'm sick, I deserve it. In bed at 9pm? I should really take it easy, because I'm sick. Does anyone else feel this way?

So, I've been laying low. Getting back to my autumn ritual of tea-drinking, for one. Enforcing lots of quiet contemplative time for hand-stitching.*

Occasionally emerging from the bedroom to bake plum cakes and bring them to neighborhood block parties.
Settling into the swing of aforementioned second job, and cheerfully confronting questions I never thought I'd ask. (Where did all this cash in my wallet** come from, and what do I do with it?)

And getting right back to bed, knees folded, needle in one hand, tea cup in the other.

* The quilt is a spin-off on this one. It's for my cousin, for Christmas. Yes, I know it's September.

** When I say "all this cash," I mean like fourteen dollars, okay? Maybe enough for some fancy-pants hand lotion, or half a new pair of earrings. Hey, it's the little things.

I hear ya! Yesterday I was downed by a sneaky UTI that had been stalking me all weekend. It finally stopped me in my tracks. I did a few errands while out to see the dr, but mostly sat on the couch, drank cranberry juice with a splash of lemon, and read a book...peace and quiet! Uncomfortable, but kinda welcome.

You have such a way with words, now I'm fantasizing about being sick! Cuddled in bed with my kitten and some tea...heavenly! Besides the whole sick thing. Glad to hear you're feeling better. Looks like you've been busy =)

Glad I'm not the only one.

Gina, slow down there, you definitely don't want the ick I had last week. Savor your good health!

That plum looks amazing! I have to agree with Gina that the way you talked about being sick makes me wish for a head cold. Hope you are feeling better soon

If you really wanted to spend that $14 on a half a pair of earrings, you could do a good job of it over here at my friend's etsy site http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5093311

The Autumn Update will be up tomorrow morning!

And ummm...are you going to share the recipe for that plum cake?

Kristina, I too have that cold, and I am drinking more tea as it gets colder. I may even have started embroidering a tablecloth that will be a Christmas present.

Brandie, the link will take you directly to the recipe.

Lisa-Marie, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only crazy who's begun her Christmas preparations.
